In a fourth solo exposition, we show older and more recent works of the artist
Irene Peschick who was born in Kassel in 1937.
Meeting the artist is still a surprise today since she does not conform to the art scene’s zeitgeist. To a large degree, she withdraws from hustle-bustle of the contemporary art world. But she is very contemporary in her Self-Sense. If you watch her at work, you need to really focus. She draws with a high degree of concentration and remarkable speed, directed by memory, inspiration and energy. In a mixture of intuition and reflection, she selects from a large number of sheets. Spontaneity coupled with distance is a core motif of her mode of working. Presentation and technique are executed nearly light-heartedly, yet in this light-heartedness lies perfection Irene Peschick cannot be pressed into any of the known cliches. Although abstract to a large degree, her drawings as well as her photography leave plenty of room for associations.
During her education at the then-renowned art academy of Kassel and as a student of the Documenta-founder Arnold Bode, painting was it. She, however, wanted to draw, and at that time, she began the scriptural traces of her handwriting. Again, when she started with photography in the sixties, photography was not met with interest in Germany. And today, she has returned to painting more, although now photography is “in”.
She moves in a room (space?) as if there is no room (space?), and she manages to distill the essential, going beyond the individualistic. “Seeing – seeing beyond”. Irene Peschick is interested in the risks of experience, and in inventing a space of gestures and signals that is accessible for all. “Search for other worlds” was the first work in a new stage of her work; she imagines this stage to last for a long and unlimited period of time.
Time – dispersed
she calls this series of new works.
For many years, Frankfurt had been the center of her life; since 2014, she has been living in Leipzig.
