This quotation from Rutger Kopland sounds like a demand for clarity, like the utopian desire to fathom and understand the world.
In my videos, maps and landscapes, water – as a driving natural force – is translated into a personal visual language. What emerges is a language of form to which droplets, rivers, lakes, the sea, polders and even pails often revert.
In my new video installation ‘Wasser & Spiegel’ or ‘Waters & Mirrors’, we are confronted with ourselves as well as with disappearance, backflow. As a mirror into our future, signs of the zodiac are converted into a series of maps, such as ‘Aquarius’ and ‘Gemini’. A mirror of man in search of a better future. Man attempts to fathom time, but the deeper the water gets, the less visible the ground beneath it becomes. The works stimulate without immediately revealing their secrets. They evoke the curiosity of the observer, and only later does their true meaning sink in.
