In Winter Coat, her first solo show at Arusha Gallery, Claire Partington's work is underpinned by a wealth of historical influences. Elements of Early Modern art and imagery spanning from the Spanish Golden Age to the Italian Renaissance, from Medieval craftsmanship to French Romanticism, are all present within her work, melting seamlessly amongst contemporary 21st century references. These works explore past and present in an interwoven yet effortless manner - dipping in and out of fairytales, lore and modern life to create intricate works that invite the viewer into their world of rich storytelling.
Beneath the work stems a tide of social commentary, particularly centred around women and the female experience. Elevated beyond their vibrant narratives, the works speak of power and strength, of societal pressures, of transcending beyond their historical boundaries to celebrate and comment upon modern femininity: figures with strength and attitude, unbeholden to their whimsical male counterparts as in the pages of the books from which they are inspired.
Claire Partington's works re-evaluate and re-define beauty, a communion of rich intricate decoration, beauty, form and context to create impactful and powerful works.
