Our eyes do not see things but images of things
meaning other things
Italo Calvino
“Se pareba boves, alba pratalia araba, et albo versorio teneba, negro semen seminaba.” (In front of him - he - led oxen, white fields - he - plowed, a white plow - he - held, a black seed - he - sowed.) This is a popular allusive text, probably the oldest in Romance language, known as the Veronese riddle, and it is about the act of writing: the oxen are the fingers, the white field is the paper sheet, the white plow is the quill pen and the black seed is the ink. It is a metaphor of truth, a reality meaning something else. Reality is always multifaceted - an issue which the Italian artist Michelangelo Galliani skillfully masters. His exhibition at Romberg (Latina) is about a sophisticated selection of his latest works in a synthesis of sacred and profane.
In the gallery space sculptures of various sizes which create a dynamic and vibrant context pleasantly coexist. The exhibition consists in small units, heads, limbs, fragments of stories that turn into more structured unities.
Galliani mimics in a clever way drawing inspiration from the classics and manipulating them, until reaching a world that has a life of its own, with a singular narrative power. He is able to trigger mixed feelings cleverly combining heterogeneous materials such as marble, steel, wax, slate, ceramic, lead and gold, which enhance each other and communicate expressiveness and lyricism. The artist easily catches the real soul of the subjects constantly keeping the project coherent as well as integrated with an expressive syntax, which favors contemporary contents, in original shapes.
By empting shapeless blocks of rough material Michelangelo Galliani extracts units both generated and generators of that existential, genuine essence, unveiling truths which "are illusions of which we have forgotten are illusions", paraphrasing Nietzsche. This is how the artist triggers a dissimulation which is the matrix of deception. (Text by Gaia Conti)
