GALERIE SUPPER is pleased to announce S CH ICHT, an extensive insight into the artistic development of Andreas Lau (b. 1964, Karlsruhe). The solo show presents selected works from different stages of Lau's past work.
"Vielschichtigkeit" is a German term which implies complexity as well as a multi-layered structure. Methodologically, is has been highly relevant for Lau's artistic work for more than 25 years now. In the beginning, his paintings resembled excavations with found objects and inclusions. Soon, a free painterly practice evolved from this archaeological approach. The signs refused any kind of allocation, they became unreadable. Rhythms and structures now arose from repetition and layering. The image broke free from composition; it implied an 'Allover', an infinite sameness. What followed were rhythmic paintings of land- and waterscapes, first portraits of the 'Anonymous' series from the 90s, and a whole body of 'Image Interferences'. For the first time, Lau used elements like signs and lines, points and structures as dissolving means here. Multi-layered and multi-sighted, he began to comb through thousands of years of human history.
The question about which guises painting can take on today has always been relevant within Lau's work, on a formal as well as on a textual level. His new series like 'Stills' or 'Situations' question the content of an image through its total dissolution into grids and patterns even more radically. What do I really see? What is hiding behind that which I think I am seeing? The title of the exhibition does not provide a clear answer to these questions. Much rather, the word play, which is basically a combination of the German terms for 'multi-layered' and 'multi-sighted' drops a slight hint: "S CH ICHT"!
For this year's art Karlsruhe (February 21-24), the modo-Verlag (Freiburg) will publish the artists' book Andreas Lau „S CH ICHT". It visualizes the devolpment described above as an ongoing, constantly evolving process. Within the frame work of the exhibition, the publication will be on view at GALERIE SUPPER for the first time.
Andreas Lau (b. 1964 in Karlsruhe) studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe with Gerd van Dülmen. His works have been exhibited at the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, the Museum Haus Ludwig Saarlouis, the Kunsthalle Würth in Schwäbisch Hall, and other exhibition spaces and galleries. Furthermore, they are included in various collections such as those of Kunsthalle and Städtische Galerie Karlsruhe, Collection of Deutsche Bank, Würth and others.
