We see very strange worlds, difficult to decipher, enigmatically faded splendour, sepia, almost black and white, poor, rottig, almost repellent and therein so infinitely rich and full of living beings, beautiful animals, overcame myths, hints, connections ... everything settled in at least pre-industrial time, if not earlier, hardly determinable. The new works by Andrea Lehmann are once again breathtaking dives into the deepest subconscious. We grope our way forward :
The huge animal in Outbreak of Disease looks similar to the Nemean lion that Rubens painted in the fight against Hercules. Hercules mastered all 12 of the supposedly unsolvable tasks of Eurystheus by not getting tangled up in his own fears and worries, but by getting involved in situations without a plan and then solving problems through completely new approaches. Monsters dissolve in this way! They are nourished by fear! In Outbreak of Disease the big animal drives on a goatcart like in an ambulance from a hospital. The hospital stands for a spiritual level on which monsters grow out of fear and infect their carriers with viruses. The viruses are elements of the primeval soup, which have not been altered by evolution, here they are represented by stone-like, geometric bodies which lie everywhere around.
The black dog of the picture Goat Thief is taken from a vase representation of the Kerberos (actually he has many heads there). He's guarding the Underworld so that no living man can enter and no dead man can leave. Nor should there be any exchange between the two worlds. A guard dog, nothing escapes. Nevertheless, there are some secret ways, exceptions where he gets sleeping pills or honey to let the living pass. He serves the ideal of separation as a monster. The guard dog in Goat Thief puts a goat from his herd in its place, which in its carriage wants to bring the Hydra or Kulkukan, the feathered snake, god of creation and reincarnation, across the border into another world. The role of eating, biting and transforming in Goat Thief is played by the mermaid, who is stuck up to her neck in a scorpion or lobster. In any case, seawomen with tails are now at home in a different world and in attempts at communication are perceived more as inner voices or have to be explained by animals belonging to both worlds.
Mermaids, nereids, they're present as pink plastic Disney Merch in all children's rooms ... but Andrea Lehmann's seawoman look like real women. With beauty and sorrow. They have natural hair colors, their fish tails are not colorful and start only in the middle of the legs, so the ladies have buttocks and sex organs ! In Greek mythology, nereids are the nymphs of the sea who protect shipwrecked people and entertain sailors with games. They live in caves at the bottom of the sea and are companions of the god Poseidon. In many ancient Greek representations, the Nereids ride on the backs of dolphins or hippocamping horses.
