Anicka Yi
The restaging of Anicka Yi's seminal work Skype Sweater at Art Basel Unlimited marks the beginning of an ongoing project-based collaboration between Metro Pictures and 47 Canal.
In establishing a model based on working closely with artists at the beginning of their careers, Metro Pictures set a precedent that 47 Canal continues to follow. Since its first iteration as the artist-run space 179 Canal, 47 Canal has maintained the artist-led ethos set in its formative years into its transition to a commercial art gallery that acts in long term support of represented artists. While Metro Pictures has the longevity, stability and reputation that comes with the associated responsibility of advancing the demanding careers of established artists, 47 Canal has the vitality, incisive critical programming and flexibility that is only possible for a young innovative gallery. These shared and distinct strengths, along with mutual regard, are the basis on which this cooperative effort was initiated.
This collaboration is an exciting platform to expand the reach of both 47 Canal and Metro Pictures in the hope to instigate new productive models for gallery cooperation.
Both galleries will continue to remain autonomous and will not share representation of artists.
