What’s it like to be on the moon?
What do you see? What do you think? What do you feel, when you look down on earth from the moon? These essential questions are answered by this graphic book by an exceptional artist – Michaela Konrad.
The answers shed some light on our “being”, on the sense and meaning of the individual, who is nothing but a miniscule part of a huge, all-embracing universe. 24 men have set out for the moon and were able to take a look at their “home-planet” from outer space. It was their thoughts, feelings and experiences which were the starting point of this delicate, sensitive and yet fulminant piece of work.
She sends her protagonist – already known in previous serial works – on a journey. She travels to the moon like the 24 men before her. She circles the moon, she lands on it and becomes a moonwalker. But the moon always stands in sharp contrast to the protagonist, since only she is drawn in strong colors. The surrounding is presented in so-called “non-colors”: black, white and grey which remind us of the many over-exposed photos of the Apollo missions.
The works of Michaela Konrad are strong in precision, clarity and she has a good eye for the bigger picture. Already some years ago I was able to get to know her artistic work. It is a big pleasure for me that the Albertina purchased 18 of her works for its graphic collection.
This book “Moonwalker” is a very special travelling narrative. The journey to the moon seems to be a cosmic destiny and at the same time a long journey to oneself.
