ABSTRACT : Known in particular for his creations composed of bottles and simple everyday objects, Giorgio Morandi (Bologna, 1890-1964) is one of the most recognizable and at the same time most enigmatic painters of the twentieth century. His ability to investigate a few selected objects is so meticulous and obsessive that it can appear repetitive, but to the eye of the attentive observer it reveals an extraordinary expressive capacity and an unparalleled depth of investigation. This monographic catalogue, offers an accurate examination of the master's production through a selection of paintings, watercolours, drawings and engravings which allow us to appreciate Morandi's exceptional subtlety in rendering light, volumes and atmospheric qualities in different techniques he used with great sensitivity. In addition to the famous still lifes, some landscapes, flower compositions and his most important self-portrait are documented. Some works by contemporary artists are also presented, as a tribute to a pioneer and master for numerous generations. The volume is completed by a biography of the artist and bibliographical apparatus. |
