Naohiro Utagawa “ Three rooms”
In some of his photographic works, including the one presented for the first time in Italy at Art Verona, “Three rooms”, Naohiro Utagawa uses different types of digital camera, from 35mm to 2000mm.
Fundamental to Utagawa's creative process is the engagement of people who ‘build’ the sets with him. These assistants, who become co-authors of the work, move the objects, link metallic tubes, juxtapose wooden sticks and collaborate with the artist until the installation is ready to be photographed. The high relational qualities of the whole process are documented through videos.
The basic stance of Naohiro Utagawa practice is in the play of being provisional and keeping on retention by talking to his inner self and to record the solving process of the introspection. He first sets a riddle to himself and then challenge to solve. The subjects of the riddles are mainly philosophical questions, mainly influenced by Wittgenstein (1889~1951), or meta approached questions: ‘what/how can/may I make an artwork, which is what he I’m doing now’.
Most of the time Utagawa reflects these solving processes in improvised composing and processing on familiar and ordinary things, and to record the indefinite process as a subject using mainly photographs, installations, words and movies which become his artwork. There is a gap between art and philosophy, between visual and written language, between logically derived thinking and the lack of self-understanding. Since these gaps are unable to be filled with principle, Utagawa tries to capture this gap and fill it with absurdity using seriousness and humour, contradiction and tautology. As a natural result, the struggle of his consideration will make aggressive distortion between the riddle and its answer. The process of these strong-arm solutions that have distortion inside is the same way as how he/we recognize the world.
Naohiro Utagawa (1981 Kanagawa, Japan) studied at Chuo University and graduated in 2004 with a Bachelors of Arts in Law. Solo exhibitions include “Pipe-chan People-chan”, Gaurdian Garden, Tokyo (2018); “Assembly” QUIET NOISE, Tokyo (2017); “7Days Aru / Irukoto” Goya Curtain, Tokyo (2016); “Table Top” Gaurdian Garden, Tokyo (2014); “DAILY” Akaruiheya, Tokyo (2010). Amongst group exhibitions “It can not be helped” Talion Gallery, Tokyo (2017); “3Days Exhibition” Seson Art Gallery, Tokyo (2017); “New Material” Casemore Kirkeby, San Francisco (2016); “Foam talent” De Markten, Brussels/ Beconsfield Gallery, London (2016); Foam talent” Unseen Photo Fair, Amsterdam / Atelier Néerlandais, Paris (2015); “New Cosmos of Photography” Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Tokyo (2013). He also received an award from the 8th “1_WALL” Photography Exhibition, which was the part of an open competition for the right to mount a solo show at the Gaurdian Garden in 2013.
