Ruth Laskey, Twill Series (Aggregate 7), 2021. Hand-woven and hand-dyed linen, 31 1/2 x 24 1/2 inches
Ratio 3 is pleased to announce an exhibition of new artworks by Ruth Laskey. For her first solo exhibition with the gallery since 2014, Laskey presents the latest weavings from her ongoing Twill Series, a sustained exploration of color and form that has defined fifteen years of artistic production. Taken together, the exhibition’s three new bodies of work reflect a remarkably prolific and inventive period in Laskey’s practice.
The exhibition begins with Laskey’s 2021 suite of weavings, Twill Series (Aggregate). Each work features irregular regions of bright color that appear to both displace and embrace one another, cohering into forms that evoke organic and geologic patterns. In the main gallery, nine weavings from 2020 feature monolithic, vessel-like silhouettes. By incrementally dying the thread used to construct these weavings, Laskey imbues her compositions with gradients that suggest light and volume. The most minimal artworks of the exhibition appear in the final gallery. Featuring circuit-like arrangements of interconnected shapes, six weavings from 2019 showcase the integration of color and pattern that is fundamental to Laskey’s mark-making.
This exhibition presents Laskey’s most painterly weavings to date. In Laskey’s weavings, twill is a brushstroke built into a picture plane. Punctuated by dyes of varied hue, sections of twill disrupt the monotone rhythm of what would otherwise be plain-woven canvas. Twill is the artist’s hand, giving shape to the gestures that evoke space, form, and feeling throughout the exhibition.
On the occasion of Laskey’s most ambitious exhibition to date, Ratio 3, in collaboration with RITE Editions, is proud to announce the publication of Twill Series, Laskey’s first monograph. Every aspect of the book’s design was overseen by the artist. The resulting publication is a tactile artifact that provides an immersive survey of a singular artistic practice.
