Sicardi | Ayers | Bacino is pleased to announce the opening of No visual distancing please..., a solo exhibition with new work by Marco Maggi (b. 1957, Uruguay). The exhibition will be Maggi's sixth solo show at the gallery and features nine works created over the last year. While the grip of the global pandemic requires us to maintain physical distancing from one another and move much of our interpersonal communication and experiences online, his microscopic detailing and incredibly fine incisions into the paper invite us to come closer, demanding a physical and visual closeness to absorb the intricacies of the precisely-rendered world Maggi creates.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a curatorial text by Catherine Craft, curator of the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, Texas, who has previously interviewed the artist and included him in the Nasher's 2017 exhibition Paper into Sculpture. In our technologically-advanced, screen-filled world of the 21st century, Maggi says "we are condemned to know more and more to understand less and less." He combats the inundation of images and constant flux of information by inviting us to absorb the image up close, slowing down the furious speed at which we normally consume. He says, "I want to make time visible. Promoting pauses, slower and closer viewers with a myopic attitude, scanning surfaces with no hope to be informed... We need to rebuild slowness and proximity. Viewers spend 16 seconds per masterpiece at the Louvre: We must change our pace of reading surfaces and faces."
