– Red Grooms - 1st floor
Marlborough is pleased to celebrate the work of Red Grooms with a survey of his multidimensional visions realized between 1974 and now. Composed of over 30 paintings and "sculpto-picto-ramas," the exhibition will explore the artist's unique methods of execution and reverberating sensibilities. The accompanying publication documenting the installation will feature a text by Thomas Micchelli, noted contributor to The Brooklyn Rail and Hyperallergic.
For over six decades, Red Grooms has embraced all things New York and served as a major chronicler of its famously frenetic lifestyle. Always vibrant, inventive, and witty, Red has reinforced the pride that New Yorkers have for their city. As somewhat of an outsider—originally from Nashville, with early sojourns to Provincetown and Chicago—Grooms has been able to clearly witness what makes the city so unique.
– Bill Brandt: Perspective of Nudes - 2nd floor
On the second floor, the gallery is pleased to present Bill Brandt: Perspective of Nudes, an exhibition of seminal nude photographs spanning the career of German-born British photographer Bill Brandt (1903-1984). Composed of 35 photographs, the exhibition explores Brandt's longitudinal study of the nude feminine form between 1945-1979. The accompanying gallery publication will feature an essay by Martina Droth, Deputy Director and Chief Curator at the Yale Center for British Art, and Paul Messier, Head of the Lens Media Lab at the Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage at Yale University.
– Alex Katz: Portraits - 3rd floor
On the third floor, the gallery is pleased to present Alex Katz: Portraits, an exhibition of 31 iconic prints from the legendary New York native who pioneered the reinterpretation of figurative subject matter utilizing a sophisticated, modern approach.
This exhibition hones in on the subject that exists at the crux of Katz's oeuvre: portraiture. Through his portraits, Katz creates a vehicle for his subjects to exist as iconography for contemporary life, pulling inspiration from characters in his milieu. Figures such as Ada, Vincent, and Sunny become instantly recognizable, as they are elevated to celebrity-like status through Katz's repeated representation on "billboard" paintings. Katz identified the biggest challenge of portraiture as being its ability to instinctually capture the essence of his subject, stating in an interview, "Strangely enough, if you don't have a good likeness you don't have a good picture."
