Kayne Griffin Corcoran is pleased to present an Online Viewing Room with Robert Irwin, on view June 1 - June 14, 2020. Robert Irwin is one of the most significant working artists today – his ground-breaking installation and sculptural work from the 1960s on have cemented his status as a pioneer of contemporary conceptual thought and aesthetics. Renowned for his innovative site-conditioned artworks, Irwin has spent his career exploring the properties of light and perception, emphasizing the way specific interventions can fundamentally alter the visual, temporal, and physical experience of space.
Irwin's Light + Shadow + Reflection + Color series, which he began in the late 2000s, mark a return to fluorescent fixtures and tubes as material, which he initially employed in the 1970s. These works are comprised of vertical rows of columnar lights, with each of the light tubes coated with colored gels that modify the light's transmission. Each work can exist in a variety of states, where some fixtures are illuminated while others remain unlit. Irwin is not only interested in the color and light generated from the sculptures themselves, but also in the spaces between the fixtures where shadows pool in moats, as well as the way the unlit bulbs reflect the colors of its environment. One of the works in this important series, Miracle Mile, was commissioned for the collection at LACMA, where it remains on long-term view.
Aces & Eights, 2012–2013, is a superb example of the Light + Shadow + Reflection + Color series. The work exists in four different configurations, or states, in which the fluorescent tubes can be lit or unlit creating subtle recalibrations in the atmosphere, mood, and environment in and surrounding the piece. Shifting through an array of neutrals, whites, and emerald greens, Aces & Eights creates a dynamic yet meditative perceptual experience, deeply involving the viewer in the process of both seeing and occupying space.
