We extend our condolences to those who have lost loved ones or are currently sick from COVID-19. This crisis is indeed unprecedented and unpredictable, and requires compassion and imagination, vigilance and discipline.
While deeply connected globally, what has come into focus is how local our most meaningful art experiences are: there is no substitute for being in the physical presence of an art object or exhibition, and certainly nothing takes the place of a discussion with others amidst those artworks. In lieu of a direct experience due to the physical distancing requirements of the pandemic, we are generating more robust content for our community, through our website, social media and direct communication. We hope you will enjoy shared information on the Gallery artists, their contributions and inspirations. This will take the form of online viewing rooms with a distinct curatorial approach, reports from artists studios, and new research on artists' historical contributions.
The Gallery's inaugural online viewing room focuses on our current exhibition, Betty Parsons: Heated Sky. The paintings and works on paper from the height of Parsons' engagement with abstraction from the 1960s to mid-1970s foreground the artist's attunement to the natural world. Parsons' keen observation of her environment was the ground for compositional methods ranging from loose biomorphism to geometric order, always featuring a dynamic sense of color.
Accompanying images of works from the exhibition is a video walkthrough of the exhibition, and Parsons' work, presented by art historian Rachel Vorsanger, Collection and Research Manager, Betty Parsons and William P. Rayner Foundation.
