The most comprehensive survey to date of works by Agnes Denes, originally scheduled to run through March 22, 2020, concluded on March 12 when The Shed was forced to temporarily close in consideration of the health and safety of its artists, audiences, and staff.
For all who had hoped to see this critically acclaimed show before it's untimely closure, we are very pleased to announce a special presentation of selected installation views and individual images on our web site.
Initiated by The Shed's Senior Program Advisor, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and organized by Senior Curator Emma Enderby with Curatorial Assistant Adeze Wilford, the exhibition of more than 150 works created in a wide range of mediums from the 1960s to the present provided a broad overview of the artist's investigations in philosophy, mathematics, science, linguistics, psychology, ecology, and religion.
In addition to three major sculptural works, newly commissioned by The Shed, highlights of the exhibition included rediscovered video and film documentation of Denes's iconic Land Art works Wheatfield–A Confrontation (1982), and Tree Mountain—A Living Time Capsule (1992–96) for which she created a mountain with 11,000 fir trees planted in a mathematical configuration near Tampere, Finland.
In his New York Times review, Holland Cotter wrote: "We'll be lucky this art season if we get another exhibition as tautly beautiful as 'Agnes Denes: Absolutes and Intermediates' at the Shed. And we'll be right to ponder why this artist, who was born in Budapest 88 years ago and has lived in New York City for more than 60 years, is only now having a retrospective here."
Our deepest gratitude goes to the following individuals at The Shed who enabled the expansive presentation of works by this singular artist: Alex Poots, Chief Executive and Artistic Director; Hans Ulrich Obrist, Senior Program Advisor; Emma Enderby, Senior Curator; Adeze Wilford, Curatorial Assistant; Jesse Hamerman, Director of Exhibitions; Heather Reyes, Exhibitions Producer, William Hempel, Registrar, Elizabeth Berridge, Exhibitions Assistant, and Art Domantay.
