Sean Kelly is delighted to announce that Leandro Erlich's most ambitious museum installation to date, Port of Reflections, will be on view at the Neuberger Museum of Art in Purchase, New York. Filling an entire museum gallery space, the work depicts a nighttime harbor scene in which five colorfully painted rowboats appear to float, gently rocking, as their reflections seem to shimmer in the waters beneath. However, visitors will discover that everything is not what it initially seems to be.
The work’s visual playfulness is underpinned by the artist's philosophical meditations. According to Erlich, “I have a feeling that our existence is ephemeral, just like a reflection. A reflection moves constantly and it’s a fragment of a second in which an image is observed as it is. This work is about the interpretation of the ephemeral quality of our life and our attempt to grasp the moment.”
Erlich is the recipient of the 2017 Roy R. Neuberger Exhibition Prize given to an exceptional artist for an early-career survey and monographic catalog. A selection of models and photographs tracing the trajectory of the artist’s career will also be on view in this exhibition.
