Noam Rappaport
Untitled, 2015 Oil and acrylic on canvas 90 x 55 x 2 inches
Ratio 3 is pleased to present Dogleg, an exhibition of recent paintings and wall-based works by Noam Rappaport. Throughout this exhibition, compositions and constructions are linked by a concise exploration of intersecting forms and blocks of color. Taken as a whole, the works comprising Dogleg present a subtle yet vast range of dichotomies and harmonies.
The large paintings in the exhibition are composed around two merging rectangles. Working on custom-shaped canvases, Rappaport addresses the junction of shapes differently in each case. Where one painting may suggest a struggle between shapes for compositional dominance, another emphasizes mutual reliance between elements. Layered paint in one region of the canvas distinguishes one shape from another, while uniform application elsewhere defines the painting as a single, continuous figure. Though composed on the same template, each work is developed and resolved uniquely.
Rappaport also presents a series of monochromatic wall-relief sculptures. Like the larger works, these smaller objects reference two intersecting elements. Each work in this series is composed of two oblique rectangular masses receding to form a horizontal seam. Rappaport’s carefully considered color reacts to a viewer's position; angles and slight inclines within each work cast shadows and create subdued changes in tone. Despite their small size and simple construction, these objects evoke a sense of mass and monumentality, existing both as intimate paintings and austere sculptures.
Noam Rappaport was born in 1974. He studied at the School of Visual Art in New York, and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. Rappaport has exhibited extensively through the United States and abroad, with recent exhibitions at the Bolinas Art Museum; Sorry We’re Closed, Brussels; White Flag Projects, St. Louis; Cherry and Martin, Los Angeles; Eleven Rivington, New York; and Brand New Gallery, Milan. He has had solo exhibitions at James Fuentes LLC in New York (2014, 2012) and White Columns, New York (2010). This is Rappaport’s second solo exhibition with Ratio 3.
