🎨 Artists
Artist(s): Francesca Mollett
Artist Abstract:
Mollett’s bounteous approach is to experience abstraction in full flight. Her mark-making deploys dashes, daubs, palette knife impasto scrapes, gestural lines, and patches, each of different weights and movement. Turpentine or damar varnish make her oils translucent and malleable, relational, and in conversation rather than talking over each other. Individual marks conglomerate into lyrical phrases that slip and slide into place on their shared common ground. The composition also apes nature’s sublime marriage of order and chaos. Irregular fields in lighter tones compress busier, dappled passages, in the manner rocks in an ancient grotto might appear amongst shrubbery, herbs and wildflowers.
This is painting that asks you not to identify or categorise, but to bring yourself fully to it, to cast off jadedness, cynicism, and preconceptions. This is painting that contains a mystery revealed only in the experience of it. It is a portal or channel rather than a static expression. There is an unapologetic and visceral pleasure in Mollett’s painting, a sense of colour and balance, energy and flow, that together connects with a greater, if unknowable, whole; an embracing of being. – Dominic Eichler, Berlin, 2026
