Double Square Gallery is pleased to present Italy-based artist Cynthia Sah's solo exhibition, Selected Memory, A Creative Process—Cynthia Sah, from May 12 to June 27, 2020. During her more than four decades of sculptor career, Sah has been the recipient of the First Prize of the Chinese Modern Sculpture Exhibition and was featured in OPEN 2000—International Exhibition of Sculpture in Venice. Known for her succinctly refined and elegant sculptural line, which reflects the composure and tranquility characteristic of Eastern philosophy, Sah has made her reputation by forging a simple, light sculptural language and aesthetic concept from stone. Three years have passed since Sah's last solo exhibition at Double Square Gallery, and this time, more than thirty sculptures and installations are shown. Meanwhile, the gallery's 2nd-floor space will continue to feature the "Lightyear Program," which is the gallery's collaboration with SAMSUNG. It is hoped that by combining SAMSUNG's flat screen TVs with video and sculpture to integrate the works into lush nature, the audience can perceive the artist's creative process in Italy and experience the powerful aesthetic tension between marble and nature.
In Selected Memory, A Creative Process—Cynthia Sah, the artist presents her inspiration from and understanding of nature through chiseling, polishing, carving and drilling, transforming hard marble blocks into forms with simple but elegant lines. Her work resembles the captivating blooming soul of marble. The artist has a keen eye for observing worldly things and respects the unique character of every marble block by following its grain, pattern, texture and shine. Incorporating her perception of cosmic life into her work, she expresses the purest, most natural aesthetic feelings. The sculptures on view in the exhibition continue her artistic vocabularies translated from natural forms, and convey her philosophical thinking and realization in life. Sah captures the spirituality in nature and meaning of life with precision. The audience will find natural imageries often seen in her oeuvre, such as the meteorological phenomena of waves and clouds, the majestic canyon and rivers, and the imageries of flora and fauna, including ray, rose and fern; they will also find mysterious planetary spheres that seem to arise from fantasies. With her chisel and carve knife, Sah perfectly interprets marble's shine and its fluidness, creating a sense of harmony and tranquility using stone and light. The artist gives the stone different lively forms that speak their own stories.
The Sah family has a pride history of over eight centuries, and the renowned 13th-century poet-painter Sah Du-La was one of Cynthia Sah's eminent ancestors, whose works are included in the collection of the Palace Museum. Other prominent figures in the family include Sah Chen-Ping, the famous admiral that fought in the First Sino-Japanese War; the well-known physicist, Sah Pen-Tung; the pioneer in the field of semi-conductor, Sah Chih-Tang; and the celebrated jurist and political science scholar, Sah Meng-Wu. Born in Hong Kong in 1952, Cynthia Sah grew up in Taiwan in the 60s, and after receiving her MA in Art and Art Education, she moved to and settled down in Seravezza near Mount Carrara in Italy, starting a life of travelling between Taiwan and Italy. Over her more than four decades of sculptor career, Sah has obtained various achievements. She is the recipient of the First Prize of Chinese Modern Sculpture Exhibition and was featured in OPEN 2000—International Exhibition of Sculpture in Venice. Her large-scale public art projects can be found worldwide, and her works have been included in the collections of various prestigious art museums and honored in numerous sculpture awards, among which are Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, Utsunomiya and Azuchi-cho in Japan, Polisine in Italy, the International Sculpture Park in Denmark, Venice and more. In recent years, she has been commissioned to create works for famous hotels, residences and corporate headquarters in Taipei, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Macau, Mexico, etc.
