Wilde is pleased to present Sous Rature, a solo exhibition by Andrea Mastrovito. This is the artist's first show in Basel. The exhibition will consist of recent works in diverse mediums, such as carved blackboard, video, works on paper, lithographic pencil on rulers and a site-specific installation made of pencil erasers.
The crux of the exhibition is the film I Am Not Legend, which is based on and a remix of George Romero's 1968 horror film, Night of the Living Dead, which in turn is based on Richard Matheson's 1954 post-apocalyptic horror novel, I am Legend. "Mastrovito's signal gesture of erasure in this film – his 'de-animating' process of flattening and distancing that evacuates any semblance of life – functions at multiple levels. Mastrovito's title, itself a statement of negative presence that is also an example of reuse, draining and refilling, points to a media culture of constant recycling and transferring of meaning." 1
