Not Vital (b. 1948) is a Swiss painter and sculptor of international acclaim. Vital maintains studios in his home region of Engadin as well as in Beijing, China, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Agadez, Niger. In his multifaceted work across drawing, painting, sculpture and monumental building Vital explores his quasi-nomadic lifestyle. Characterized by an approach of fleet-footed alchemy, Vital in his work either relocates non-Western imagery or, using a minimalist aesthetic, transforms local Swiss symbols into surreal dreamlike constructs. His art, on view at Galerie Kornfeld for the first time, is mobile much as himself.
