Since her first exhibition at Galerie Mark Müller over 20 years ago, we have been working with the American artist Marcia Hafif (*1929 in Pomona, CA). She is one of the key figures, who dedicated their artistic endeavour to the exploration of what painting entails, as an artistic genre, a material object and as a practice. Her main focus is on the effect of colour on a surface, its manufacture and its application. From the early 1970ies on, her work-series like «An Extended Gray Scale» (1973) with 106 panels of gradients from White to Black or the «Black Paintings» (1979/80), are representative for Hafif's systematic and yet adventurous practice by which she pushes the boundaries of monochrome painting. Until today, the artist continuously extends her «Inventory» with painterly investigations, but also with drawing, film and photography.
Now arises the unique opportunity to get an overview of Marcia Hafif's extensive work. The Kunsthaus Baselland in Muttenz (CH) and the Kunstmuseum St.Gallen (CH) developed two exhibitions in close collaboration, dedicated to the artists oeuvre from a different perspective each.
We are very delighted to see Marcia Hafif being honoured with this retrospective and we absolutely recommend visiting both exhibitions!
