In the late 1980s, art increasingly became the prestige project of the market in the sense of everything goes. Decorative trophies increasingly determined the surface. Martin Kippenberger revolted against this tendency by directly addressing it in his works. In parallel, a group of mainly young American artists formulated intellectual and conceptual positions in art that were critical of the market. Referring to the institutional critique of the 1960s and 1970s, an art emerged that massively incorporated the process of creation and, above all, the conditions of the exhibition site into the artwork.
Clegg & Guttmann, Mark Dion, Andrea Fraser, Renée Green, Martha Rosler and Heimo Zobernig were among the protagonists, each creating unique groundbreaking signatures.
Focal points of this development were the galleries American Fine Arts, Pat Hearn, Metropol and Galerie Christian Nagel.
Context art was one of the last important style formations of the 20th century. Kader Attia is an artist who brings context art into the 21st century by placing it in the center of recent postcolonial political debates.
