Kukje Gallery is pleased to present 'Siamese,' a solo exhibition by Wook-kyung Choi from May 21st to June 28th, 2020. The new works conceived for Siamese interrogate notions of duality inherent in modes of display within the context of queer culture. Through a delicate interplay of scale, texture and materiality, Choi invokes an array of scenarios that connote sexual fetishes, seeking to reform conventional rules of engagement vis-à-vis intimate and obscured topics by bringing them out into the open. This series of work parses the staunch formalism of Kim Chong Yung, a torchbearer of Korean abstract sculpture, to reveal latent potentialities within his iconic silhouettes. Choi deploys logics of queer formalism as a means of subverting Kim's non-objective approach to representation, allowing his own works to divulge an ontological capacity for expression in a non-binary world.
Wook-kyung Choi (b.1991) received his BFA in sculpture from Seoul National University and MFA from Korea National University of Arts. He has held solo exhibitions at Commonwealth and Council (Los Angeles, 2018), sansumunhwa (Seoul, 2018) and Hapjungjigu (Seoul, 2017). His work has been included in group exhibitions at Ilmin Museum of Art (Seoul, 2020), Asia Culture Center (Gwangju, 2020), Platform-L (Seoul, 2019), National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Gwacheon, 2019) and Audio Visual Pavilion (Seoul, 2017). He participated in the 10th Seoul Mediacity Biennale (Seoul, 2018) and was a resident at Seoul Art Space Geumcheon in 2019.
