CUTTING-EDGE WORK BY EIGHT FILIPINO ARTISTS INSPIRED BY THE CITIES THEY INHABIT
Sundaram Tagore Singapore and curator Gary Ross Pastrana present work by eight emerging and established artists from the Philippines who find inspiration exploring their everyday surroundings. Through painting, sculpture, installation, photography and video, these artists create personal narratives influenced by the colorful, chaotic streets of Manila and beyond.
Articulated in a diverse range of techniques, mediums and aesthetics, the work in this show is mined from the city streets—whether through incorporation of found objects, such as with Poklong Anading’s video installation housed in a shelter fabricated from old rags, or paying homage to the urban experience through prolific visual documentation of Manila street life, as with MM Yu’s photography. The work in this exhibition offers a rare glimpse into one of the most dynamic up-and-coming contemporary art scenes in Southeast Asia.
On view will be work by Poklong Anading, Louie Cordero, Vic Balanon, Nona Garcia, Kawayan De Guia, MM Yu and design collective Broke.
The exhibition will be on view during Art After Dark, a late-night Gillman Barracks open house during Singapore Art Week 2018. The gallery will be open Friday, January 26, until 10 pm.
