Matt Mullican, "New Edinburgh Encyclopedia, 1825" (1991), installation view at Galerie Thomas Schulte, Berlin, 2024, photo by Stefan Haehnel
Comprising 446 large magnesium printing plates with corresponding paper rubbings that reproduce the illustrations of the 1825 Edinburgh Encyclopædia, this major work stands among Mullican's most significant projects. It traces his ongoing investigations into systems of knowledge, meaning, and language, as well as the relationship between seeing and representation. The condensed installation at our booth draws from the body of printing plates that form the essence of the work and carry the encyclopedia's illustrations in alphabetical order. Within it, images, plans, and diagrams spanning engineering, architecture, anatomy, horticulture, and other fields form a concise portrait of early nineteenth-century knowledge, outlining the continuity of images across centuries—from their creation to their reproduction, transformation, and the frameworks they sustain.
