Ten years after Nancy Spero's death, Lillehammer Art Museum is presenting a large-scale survey exhibition dedicated to this fascinating American artist.
This is the first time a solo exhibition of Nancy Spero’s (1926–2009) works will be arranged in Norway. Spero is one of the most significant figures in post-war American art.
She engaged in a complex way with existential aspects of what it means to be human. Main themes were women as victims of war and political conflicts, sexualized violence and general oppression - both the visible and invisible oppression of women. From the 1980s, she also focused on strong and vivacious women. The exhibition deals with all chapters of Spero's artistry.
Spero is just as relevant today and the exhibition gives a unique opportunity to put important feministic issues on the agenda. Nancy Speros’ voice is anchored in our past and in our present.
The exhibition features around 70 pieces including works on paper, paintings, and installations and is being organized by Museum Folkwang in Essen, Germany.
Supported by the Fritt Ord Foundation.
