This spring you can explore the magical world of artist Ugo Rondinone (Switzerland, 1964) in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. He will bring together new and existing works in a large installation like a colour spectrum revealing the various facets of existence. Forty-five life-size clown sculptures will form the centrepiece of his first solo exhibition in the Netherlands: ‘Ugo Rondinone -Vocabulary of Solitude’.
Something strange happens every time you look at Rondinone’s art. He gives everyday motifs and images a poetic dimension by isolating or enlarging them. On the floor of the 1500m2 Bodon Galleries visitors will move between life-size clown figures, each engaged in a different everyday activity: sleeping, daydreaming, waking up, sitting, running etc. In this installation, the clown – at the centre of everything and in the middle of nothing – is the visualization of introversion.
The clown sculptures have never previously been exhibited and will be transported directly to Rotterdam from Rondinone’s studio in New York. The exhibition opens during Art Rotterdam Week.
Rainbows
The installation includes half mandala paintings created with an airbrush technique. The optical effect of the large rainbow bands of colour makes them dance before your eyes. The large window of the Bodon Galleries will be covered with a filter in all the colours of the rainbow, creating an intense colourful glow throughout the garden gallery. The rainbow theme continues in thousands of drawings by children: young artists who have responded to the artist’s request for help in creating a 4 x 30 metre wall of rainbow drawings.
Ugo Rondinone allows his artworks to speak for themselves. His motto is that people should experience artworks rather than understand them. “Good art revolutionizes your whole being. It is something that stops you, or slows you down.”
Ugo Rondinone
From poetic installations in public spaces to life-size drawings: Ugo Rondinone’s work balances on the edge of euphoria and depression. He is one of the world’s leading visual artists. He represented Switzerland at the Venice Biennale in 2007 and has had major solo exhibitions at the Pompidou Centre, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, the Kunsthalle Wien and Palais Tokyo.
Activities and events
During the exhibition the museum will organise an extensive programme of activities for young and old including a meet & greet with the artist, an expert meeting and children’s workshops. A film about the artist will be available on ARTtube.nl.
Contemporary art in Boijmans In the spring of 2016 contemporary art takes centre stage at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen with Ugo Rondinone, the major exhibition ‘Project Rotterdam’ and the 8th edition of Sensory Spaces. The museum has a long tradition of experimental exhibitions of work by leading international contemporary artists. At the museum’s invitation, Ugo Rondinone follows in the footsteps of Fischli & Weiss (2003/2004), Urs Fischer (2006), Yayoi Kusama (2008), Pipilotti Rist (2009), Olafur Eliasson (2005, 2010), Carsten Höller (2010), Paul Noble (2014) and many others.
