TORCH
Was founded in 1984 as one of the first galleries for contemporary photography in Europe. Since then the gallery has become well known for a wayward program of exhibitions by artists who often test the boundaries of good taste and art in general. It is a gallery with a strong international focus that strives to introduce local talent abroad and to present proven names in Amsterdam. For 6 voor 6 they will make a selection of new work by Martin C. De Waal, Twan Janssen, Line Gulsett and Anya Janssen. They will also present a special showcase of work by the young photographer Sander Dekker.
Sander Dekker
admires people with outspoken personalities, and for his ongoing series 'The Project' he asks these extravagant individuals to guide him for a while. Through his models he finds adventures that he captures along the way with a lot of energy. He travels the world, preferably to places he has never visited before, to search for fragments from the lives of charismatic people. Photographer and model collaborate to create a photoshoot driven by the natural course of their encounter. Every shoot becomes a small tableaux about glamour, exhibitionism, vulnerability and awkwardness. For 6 voor 6 he will work together with TORCH to create a very special presentation of this body of work.
Anya Janssen
Will present a selection of works from "People say I'm different", a series of pieces describing the intriguing and discomforting contact between the artist and a young woman from Uganda. These tentative pieces describe stories of exclusion and affinity as told by a woman with a lot of hidden history and a confident, almost combative presence. The total isntallation can be seen as a threedimensional exploration of violence and as a striking development in her oeuvre, which in turn can be described as an artistic approximation of empathy and a bridging of the distance to the ever present other.
