KOSAKU KANECHIKA is pleased to present Yutaka Aoki's solo exhibition "INTO THE AIR" from Saturday, March 7, 2020 at the gallery subspace.
A scene that has yet to transpire, draws in the light of that moment.
Color exposed to light, a form is forged through such hues.
To pursue the bearings of light found in these shapes.
I wish to temporarily halt this momentum.
Yutaka Aoki continues to explore the possibilities of painting through his meticulous study of light. In his craftsmanship, a careful attentiveness is given to the synergy between the 2D and 3D nature of each piece, the properties of each individual material, the production process, and the movement of the human eye. In 2019, Aoki held his breakthrough exhibition titled "Today's" at KOSAKU KANECHIKA, condensing his introspective gatherings and observations into a breathtaking show.
This current exhibition appears as a recollection of the adversities and growth the artist has encountered since his last solo exhibition. To preface, the works exhibited in this show demonstrate the rich expression of Aoki's ever-evolving paintings. Within an amalgamation of light, color, shape, and material, pulses of flooding spirituality color the artist's canvases. It is from the concentration of these elements onto smaller surfaces that allows for a more intimate and poignant translation of the artist's intent.
Distinguished in Aoki's attention to detail, a rediscovery of familiar sceneries and themes are expressed in the works of this exhibition. Serving as the turn of a new leaf for the artist himself, a process of experimentation and new discoveries has been documented within Aoki's latest works. Through the use of dynamic brushstrokes that appear to capture their surrounding light, it is from such subtleties that Aoki appears to address the inconceivable number of possibilities that still await him within the realm of painting. Presenting approximately 18 of the artist's newest paintings, we cordially invite you to visit Yutaka Aoki's solo exhibition "INTO THE AIR."
Yutaka Aoki was born in Kumamoto Prefecture in 1985, and is currently based in Tokyo. In 2008, he graduated from Tokyo Zokei University's Department of Fine Arts, and received a Master of Fine Arts from the same institution in 2010.Aoki's major solo exhibitions include "multiprime" (hiromiyoshii, 2011), "OUTER ROOM, INNER GARDEN" (Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto, 2012), and "Mouvements" (Sprout Curation, 2014). His notable group exhibitions include "The Way of Painting" (Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, 2014), "VOCA" (The Ueno Royal Museum, 2016), and "Collection Exhibition" (Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto, 2016). Aoki's works have also been included in public collections such as the Takahashi Collection at the Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto. "INTO THE AIR" will mark Aoki's third solo exhibition at KOSAKU KANECHIKA since 2017 and 2019.
