12 March > 23 April, 2023

After the inauguration, last December 17, with the exhibition Gray Shadows: Rue Battaglia crosses Avenue de Maupassant: the Sandokan of
Dino Battaglia, the gallery restarts on Saturday 11 March with the second exhibition, in the year in which the centenary occurs
from the death of Maestro Dino Battaglia, Ombre gray opens: Rue Battaglia crosses Avenue de Maupassant
Maupassant. Seven of the eight stories part of the cycle that the Venetian author creates will be exhibited,
masterfully adapting some of the stories about the Franco-Prussian war by the French writer Guy de
Maupassant. It is not the first time that Battaglia has used great literature to experiment and
reinterpret the tradition, he had already done it with Herman Melville's Moby Dick and later with
some of the stories of the American writer Edgar Allan Poe.
Thus were born: Two friends, Saint Antoine, The adventure of Walter Schnaffs, A coup d'état, Ball of sevo, Mamma Sauvage, Miss Fifì and Milon (the only story that will be visible in a binder but not exposed due to the lack of some plates). Eight short stories, made for Linus magazine between '76 and '77, set during the Prussian occupation of France. Battaglia focuses on the setting history and even more on the characterization of the characters who transcend the singularity of the situation, highlighting the different facets of human nature, surprising for better or for worse. In Mom Sauvage you can admire how great is the love of a mother and at the same time the hatred that this one can feel when wounded, Ball of tallow demonstrates what baseness human beings are capable of doing in order to achieve one's own advantage, while Due Amici is an example of nobility of mind and loyalty. Shadows Grigie offers the public the extraordinary opportunity to lead a journey to discover the "master of the masters”, as Dino Battaglia had defined him, and of his revolutionary art, which broke the mold stiffness of the board, exploding the grid, dissolving the balloons, giving the lettering a new look and new meaning, in an innovative dialogue between the white space, the use of solid black and the invention of grey as the color of the soul, giving life to supernatural atmospheres dominated by figures that emerge with shocking power. The opportunity to see seven stories from this cycle exhibited in Milan is without precedents, and for the first time part of this precious material will be on the market, in this case Mother Sauvage and Milon. In addition, all the Thames Monster, episode plates will be available of Inspector Coke originally left unfinished by Battaglia and completed by the artist who most of all Corrado Roi took up the baton in the use of gray.
