This solo exhibition by Eva Marisaldi reflects parallel lines of thought that unfold through new works in a range of different media.
The rooms of the gallery house drawings, objects, sounds, and animated images.
Animation turns up throughout Marisaldi’s work, not just in her videos and storyboards, but in motionless forms crafted from ephemeral, transitory materials. Over the course of time, processes of transformation and transfiguration yield new narratives.
The space is organized along horizontal planes—a series of objects on the ground, a mobile sculpture above, and an intermediate line of drawings on the walls—in a temporal juxtaposition that evokes the swarm of stimuli to which we are constantly exposed.
Below - Scattered across the ground are her Spostati (“shifted” works): cardboard boxes modified with papier-mâché to create ghostly, “vagabond” objects. Cardboard and papier-mâché appeal to the artist because they are humble, malleable materials, used for party decorations and ephemeral sculptures: “It’s a material within easy reach. Cartons are the froth on a sea of merchandise, they speak to you, they suggest things.” Wafting out of some boxes are muffled, insistent noises, “a sort of repeated, wooden knock-knock-knock, a sound I once heard in real life and that stayed with me, ‘fermenting,’ for many years.”
Between – Four series of drawings, arranged at the same height in a line ringing the rooms, present images of lakes (drawn from Knife in the Water), paper landscapes, birds, people, and vehicles loaded with a choreographic array of bulky objects.
Above – A mobile sculpture runs across the ceiling of the gallery: a wave that bounds out into space, in a long, moving fishbone shape that resembles a chronophotograph of birds in flight. The wave unfurls over our heads, back and forth, petering out only to start over again.
The interaction of these various levels, which are both spatial and conceptual, filters and transforms scraps and impressions of the world to form a vast drawing that surrounds us.
During the span of the exhibition there will be a series of screenings dedicated to the artist’s work in video.
