“Life is lived in a zone in which earthly substances and aerial media are brought together in the constitution of beings, which, in their activity, participate in weaving the textures of the land. Here, organisms figure not as externally bounded entities but as bundles of interwoven lines of growth and movement, together constituting a meshwork in fluid space. The environment, then, comprises not the surroundings of the organism but a zone of entanglement. Life in the open, far from being contained within bounded places, threads its way along paths through the weather world. Despite human attempts to hard surface this world, and to block the intermingling of substance and medium that is essential to growth and habitation, the creeping entanglements of life will always and eventually gain the upper hand.Ancora” (Tim Ingold ,2008)
In 2016 Maisie McNeice completed three artist residencies on biologically diverse research stations in the Peruvian Amazon Jungle over a period of ten months. This exhibition is a selection of works from an on-going investigation of this exploration.
Maisie's total immersion in complex, and at times dangerous environments, intensifies a pragmatic use of her senses, and stimulates the flight or fight response that is integral to survival. Raised on a lion research station in Botswana, Maisie's interest in humankind's atavistic relationship with wild environments has been a defining influence.
She is interested in the entangled relationship between man and nature. She delves into her work from an evolutionary perspective, seeking to understand how humans adapt to and perceive their environments over time. Through close observation, she trains her eye to gather evidence of animals' presence thereby, collecting traces and documenting fleeting moments left behind. In collaboration with field researchers, camera traps were set up in impenetrable jungle, to capture ephemeral, nocturnal moments impossible to observe by foot. By detailed collecting, documenting and archiving she explores ways by which she can communicate transitory moments.
This exhibition is a glimpse into her research.
