Tall, sturdy, enduring, majestic. Trees have been part of our lives since ancient times when, sacred and untouchable, were revered and protected as a manifestation of the divine, energy, masters to which ask for support, relief and inspiration. Plants are extremely powerful beings, in their myth legends of earthly life and sacred experience have been developed. Nature is starring again at Romberg gallery in Latina with the exhibition of the new series of works on paper by Sebastiano Guerrera. 45 trees, thirty small and fifteen large, and 1 map.
In "Alberi maestri", such is the title of the show, the only map on display represents the link leading the older production towards the new ones, it is the matrix of shapes that disengage themselves to live isolated and to be the owners of their own space; by osmosis each tree trunk holds within itself a memory of it, a footage. Each work fosters a high technical quality and a mature honesty: the stroke seems endlessly branching out on the paper as if it were sprouting itself little by little, sometimes feeble sometimes strong, but always confident. Guerrera develops extensive drawing skills featuring a firm stroke and subject, succeeding in impressing with a balanced elegance in composition.
His trees are living, not vegetating, without being intrusive. Oak, beech, chestnut, walnut, birch, hornbeam, and many others. Breathing forces with no frills in which color is not expected. Blank sheet, black pencil. Austerity in a play of solids and voids. Wise and still, the trees develop into an image of a time crystallized by the artist's hand. Trees as a metaphor of poetry that rejects the superfluous and revolves in a central synthesis. An inherent poetry that emancipates for the occasion in the words of the poet Franca Mancinelli, rhymes as fellow travelers crawling among the branches caressing them intimately.
The bare natural architectures of Sebastiano Guerrera appear as visible forms and structures of a private and personal atlas. Single individuals, single men, single stories. "Alberi maestri" is an exhibition successfully rooted into the ground that reaches peaks of intense lyricism, is a continuum that analyzes elsewhere places with a vibrant graphic sign within the boundaries of a clever geography.
