The de' Foscherari Gallery is pleased to announce the arrival of the exhibit Piero Manai - Luigi Presicce, Self-portrait with masks 1899 curated by Antonio Grulli, which will open on Thursday, March 31 at 6:30pm. The exhibit facilitates the dialogue between the works of two artists from two different generations: Piero Manai (Bologna 1951-1988) and Luigi Presicce (Porto Cesareo 1976 - lives both in Porto Cesareo and Florence).
The starting point of the project is the painting by James Ensor, Self-portrati with masks from 1899, which both artists used as a reference for one of their own works. Manai, in a crucial moment in his life, relates to the Belgian master's painting, re-drawing the over fifty masks in as many strips of canvas paper.
Presicce instead taps into the painting's iconography for one of his tableaux vivant. The work by Ensor is also indicative of the journey of the two artists, united by their research which focused on the use of the body as a moment of personal introspection and as material for artistic creation; the body, which becomes the central element in a theater built of anatomic deconstructions and revisions, with endless mise in scenes; a source of allegories and symbols that at times allude to our relationship with death.
Where Piero Manai's work was consists almost entirely within the practices of drawing and painting, Luigi Presicce's extends into and embraces both sculpture and performance. However, the relationship with photography (and with video in Presicce's case) is crucial for both of them; in the first work as the initial suggestion to create a work of art, while in the second as mostly a final work in which the performances and the tabaleaux viviant often converge and flow into each other.
Besides the two works tied to the Ensor painting there will also be a series of other works done in different styles which will compare the two artists, forcing them to interact.
