As the first opening of the season, Osart Gallery is pleased to present a group exhibition dedicated to Conceptual Photography.
With a selection of works, produced between 1965 and 1997 by Vito Acconci, Vincenzo Agnetti, Giorgio Ciam, Kenneth Josephson, Ketty La Rocca, Gordon Matta Clark, Duane Michals, Claudio Parmiggiani, Aldo Tagliaferro, and Michele Zaza, Conceptual Photography features the rise of an innovative way of conceiving and then employing the photographic medium.
This approach, which becomes particularly significant from Duchamp's ready made onwards, sets the photography free from its traditional role: representing the world. A new emphasis has been placed on content and the result is anything but obvious.
The show, entirely built on vintage photographs, interchanges photographic sequences with single installations that encourage the viewer adopting a fresh look.
The exhibition opens with visual suggestions offered by Giorgio Ciam, Kenneth Josephson and Gordon Matta Clark. The usage of “pure” images provide the audience with the chance of elaborating a free interpretation.
At this stage, it is extremely difficult to distinguish fiction from reality. The exhibition continues with narrative sequences by Duane Michals, Aldo Tagliaferro and, Michele Zaza.
The time frame is set by the stories that the artists illustrate that mainly deal with misleading myths, human existence and memory.
Vito Acconci, Vincenzo Agnetti, Claudio Parmiggiani e Ketty La Rocca introduce a textual element into their creative process.
This creative process includes annotations, numerical sequences, symbols and graphic signs that subordinate the aesthetic value of photography in favor of the pursuit of an idea.
