Nature Morte is pleased to present an exhibition of works spanning 40 years by the artist Rm. Palaniappan. With this exhibition, we bring together over 30 works on paper and canvas dating from 1980 to 2020, showing the artist's development from printmaking to painting.
Born in Devakottai, Tamil Nadu in 1957, Palaniappan's early years were spent considering an occupation in the sciences, however, science, mathematics and astronomy found their way into a lifelong art practice instead. His first encounter with the cinematics of WWII in 1970 left him fascinated with the dynamics of the flying machine. The visual vocabulary of this experience stayed with him for decades recurring as maps, grids, and aerial terrains in his prints.
Palaniappan's prints from the 1980s are characterized by a plethora of information combining notations, marks, cyphers, and signs into densely layered graphic ensembles. With the addition of graphic elements and hand colouring, Palaniappan subverts the multiplicity inherent in printmaking, rendering each work unique. Through these works, Palaniappan outlines deeper considerations of time, space, and movement, and attempts to transcend the linearity of the physical world as experienced by him. Transitioning from prints to drawings in the late 1980s, Palaniappan concentrated on line as his visual tool describing the trajectories a moving object or body makes as it travels through space and time. On view will also be acrylic paintings from 2019 and 2020, which demonstrate a subtle yet highly sophisticated use of colour and a continued interest in diagrammatic notations and graphic strategies.
