In his works on paper, the Franco-German artist Edouard Baribeaud (*1984 in Versailles, lives in Berlin) stages myths, stories and pictorial traditions on the art stage. For this purpose, Baribeaud developed a special visual language: the often exotic-looking patterns and ornaments of the staffage, interior furnishings and clothes of his contemporary protagonists tell of places, times and traditions that can also be read as metaphors for free formation of identities. Baribeaud's inclusion of the most varied of decorative and handicraft techniques is an expression of his view of art, which makes no distinction between fine and applied art.
So everything we show in the exhibition is like this: The original illustrations of his (children's) book »The Fabulous Story of the Giant Théophile«, which is currently being published by Hatje Cantz, are free works that teach us to be amazed. We are also presenting a series of works on paper created between 2009 and 2013, all of which deal directly or indirectly with childhood, fairy tales and children's books. The luminous and precisely executed ink and gouache works lead into mythological worlds and timeless dream landscapes that tie in with the work of authors such as Hergé and Maurice Sendak and in which one would like to linger for a long time - hypnotized by the dense patterns.
