Gloria Grahame, the star of Fritz Lang’s The Big Heat (1953), had never served James Bond a Martini in real life. He liked his drink, as we all know, shaken, not stirred. We are certain, however, that Gloria Grahame would never have dreamed of stirring the martini. It’s an attitude, a way of life. Rock ’n’ Roll is shaken, the waltz is stirred.
Artists acknowledge and understand one another beyond language. On his canvases, Julian Lethbridge brings together two of the most American -isms in recent art history, Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism, in an extremely unique, original way – shaken, not stirred.
Katja Strunz’s beginnings were inspired by Russian constructivism – geographically at the other end of the world – and these references are still inscribed in her autonomous work today. Her first collages, from which the Pulp Paintings are derived, were a coincidence. Shredded paper falling onto a surface.
Notwithstanding the difference of these influences, the viewer reveals an artistic kinship between the two artists within seconds. At first glance, this isn’t necessarily made out visually, it discloses itself latently, unconsciously. Maybe it’s an attitude. Maybe it’s shaken, not stirred.
