»Painting, like my pictures, is what enables me to react and position myself beyond the means of speech, sound and gesture. In the end, I try to get a picture for lack of words.«
WORKS
Ottersbach has always reflected upon his position as an artist and painter. He continues devoting himself to notions of originality and artifact even though the aesthetic and political means and terms have changed in art and painting. They still do. Painting for Ottersbach is occurrence. It means slowing down. It is indeed late by necessity.
»On Offer Due to Circumstances«, on view at Beck & Eggeling in Düsseldorf and Vienna in 2016, was a source of irritation for many. Others appreciated it all the more. The artist was happy. After all, this is where his articulated distancing from motif and object of interest became apparent.
His current work marks a shift in his approach to that very object of interest. One is always the result of ones circumstances. For some years now, Ottersbach has been living mostly in Sweden, close to nature and wilderness. This has had some impact on his work. His pictures and attitudes have changed.
In fact, the artist's roaming through his own biography and personal circumstances is what characterises these pictures. They deal with »identity and terrain«, always in the open sense of terrain.
»Distancing seemed of little help in recent years. Critical positioning? As a painter? I found this increasingly boring. Ground experience became more and more attractive.
Indeed I never actually painted landscapes. I painted pictures about landscape, pondering the history of their depiction in painting.«
For the last two or three years, painting what he calls »depictions of terrain« has become Ottersbach's chosen preference. As far as he is concerned, identity is an investigative process and terrain, very much like painting. »Like a screw, I am winding myself into matters of interest. I imagine there being an end to the drill. I know nothing about it.«
What matters is the assimilation of space and occurrence, a thorough understanding of painting, slowing down and interiorising. There may be »nothing« there, no »more or less« either though.
