The largest exhibition to date of Slavs and Tatars' work in Germany, Made in Dschermany extends the artists’ robust practice into German orientalism, philology and the country’s relationship with Islam, through the perspective of four letters: DSCH. Keen observers of epiphenomena–from monobrows to mistranslations–the artists shed light on the little-known history of Germany’s relationship with the east, at the Albertinum’s Lipsiusbau, at a time and place where such issues of faith and identity are increasingly instrumentalized against their own history.
On the occasion of the exhibition, Wripped Scripped, an artist book co-published by Hatje Cantz and Kunstverein Hannover, further explores the politics of alphabets, including an essay on gender-fluidity within a 14th century Sufi science of letters.
