Samuel Henne’s work is concerned with physical and visual ways of displaying objects, with key aspects of the representation of and presentability of sculpture and of its transformation into an image. In his latest works, the artist grapples with different forms of museum displays and display cabinets, and with the archiving and visual recording of sculptures and objects. The staging and the control of lighting and colour transform the carefully arranged and constructed motifs in the studio into autonomous visual compositions pregnant with meaning. In his artistic work and quest for new images, Samuel Henne appropriates visual material that is already available, reshaping it and placing it in new contexts, but at the same time also clearly revealing his own interest in the history of art and culture. He tackles the underlying issues in representation, in creating meaning and in producing presence effects.
Uncover. Organize. Relocate. Bring something to light. There is a fundamental connection between Samuel Henne’s works and the early archaeological excavations whose photographic documentation is one of the sources he draws on for this exhibition previously shown in a similar configuration at the Hildesheim Art Society.
