Painting gone out of fashion yet again? Authenticity and individual authorship even more so? Overshadowed by greed, fraud and forgery scandals, the art scene increasingly appears to mistake itself for art.
In view of the above Beck & Eggeling are presenting at this year‘s open gallery weekend (2 Sept. 2016) an exhibition devoted ‚only‘ to the painted image. This is in itself nothing unusual for a prominent painter like Heribert C. Ottersbach, known for his systematic investigation of such an ‚uncool‘ medium.
His most recent pictures are irritating. Instead of the expectedly challenging series dealing with current events, art history and cultural history, ‚ordinary‘ subject matter and moderate sizes are now characteristic of his current work. Apparently unrelated pieces are being shown in this exhibition: still lifes, landscapes, banal architecture, painted signatures.
Even if Ottersbach‘s attention now appears to be entirely focused on the commonplace, the critical eye that has become so indispensable to his creative work remains sharp. Pictures, title and exhibition concept all suggest a deeper, more profound meaning. Ottersbach‘s reflexions on conflicting forces responsible for the subtle alienation of art from the art scene are expressed in pictures. These are images of his irritations. It is the gallery‘s conscious decision to make way for Heribert C. Ottersbach‘s critical stance on the development of the art scene and the status of painting itself in this commercial day and age pervaded by an overabundance of digital images.
A publication including a text by FK Blaustein will be produced in conjunction with the exhibition. The opening will take place on 2nd September 2016 in the context of the open gallery weekend DC-open 2016.
OPENING RECEPTION: 2. September, 18 hour in the context of the open gallery weekend DC-open 2016.
