GALERIE Supper, Baden-Baden, proudly presents “Pranks on the Dyke“, a solo show with recent works by internationally renowned artist Roland Schauls (*1953, Luxemburg).
“Prank” is a term for an entertaining stage play which questions the seriousness of the world and everyday life by means of confusion, coincidence and exaggeration. With this in mind, Roland Schauls’ paintings introduce to us playful, self-staging figures, which seem to founder on any kind of seriousness or severity. The figures are nameless. There is no question about where they come from or where they are going. Also time seems to be strangely enraptured within these paintings. Clothing and accessories from the most different epochs are being mixed up. Kids, trying to be grown up. Kids, thinking a crown would be enough, or a hand full of medals on the jacket. But the footsteps they try to fit in are still too big – shoes are often to be found at the lower bottom of the picture, like casual observers, forgotten or rejected. There’s an unfinished Pierrot sitting in the midst of this masquerade, almost like a key to the whole situation. A baroque Clown, mutely balancing on the tightrope between melancholic dreariness and naïve joy.
The scenery confronts us with issues Schauls has always been addressing in his artistic work. By means of various art historical references, side blows and parodies, he manages to reflect on the roots and history of painting, its protagonists and highlights as well as its supporting acts and nuances. But he always keeps a slight twinkle in his eyes.
Roland Schauls (*1953, Luxemburg) lives and works in Luxemburg and Stuttgart. He has studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart before he started lecturing at the independent art school. Schauls’ works have been exhibited at the Biennale São Paulo, the Musée National d’Histoire et d’Art Luxembourg and the National Gallery Prague among other places. Furthermore, they are represented internationally in various collections.
Preceding our event, there will to be the opening of the group show „GIRLS&BOYS“ by Gallery Hammelehle und Ahrens at Vickermann & Stoya.
