Greusslich Contemporary is pleased to cordially invite you, Press Release, to the catalog presentation during Gallery Weekend Berlin, 1st of May, 2015, 1–9 pm!
In his third solo-exhibition with Greusslich Contemporary, José Noguero introduces a selection of his new, fulminantly painted landscape paintings, which bear esoteric names such as, "Irium", "Lutetium" or "Scandium". The titles refer to certain chemical elements, namely those rare earth metals which in nature occur only in the tiniest amounts. The title of the exhibition suits the uncommon frequency of these exceedingly complex images, upon which a multilayered interaction of colors, forms, lines and colored rivulets energetically coalesce and discharge in true 'storms' of painting, all the while opening to wide-ranging, grandiose landscapes with a positively baroque dynamism.
Now and then in the images traces of faces and figures spectrally emerge, remnants of paraphrases of old master paintings, which – typically for Noguero's idiosyncratic working method – serve as a point of departure for the invention of his images, before they become respectively painted away or radically transformed through a protracted process of destruction and composition. Noguero, through the confrontation with traditional painting and its claims to quality, explores the possibilities of a contemporary (landscape) painting, operating on the level of current discourse in the arts.
José Noguero, born in 1969 in Barbastro, Huesca (Spain), has lived and worked in Berlin since 1999. He is represented in the following collections: Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Reina Sofía, Madrid – CAC, Málaga – CDAN, Huesca – ARTIUM, Vitoria-Gasteiz – Fundació Suñol, Barcelona – Diputación General de Aragón – Diputación de Huesca – Ayuntamiento de Pamplona, Navarra – Colección Coca-Cola, Madrid – Künstlerförderung, Berlin.
