Espace Meyer Zafra is pleased to present for the first time at the gallery a solo show of the
French artist Léopoldine Roux, Hasta el Cielo. Born in 1979 in Lyon, Léopoldine Roux
graduated from EESAB in Rennes and from ENSAV La Cambre in Brussels. Since 2010, she has
carried out several artist residencies, such as at the Platform China Contemporary Art Institute
in Beijing or at KAIR in Japan. She exhibits regularly in Belgium, Luxembourg and Lebanon.
Her work is part of several private collections such as the National Bank of Luxembourg and
the Boghossian Foundation, and public Federation Wallonia Brussels in Belgium.
The setting in motion of color, the exploration of its range of possibilities refocuses Roux’s practice on a gestural issue. For almost 15 years, she has explored all the possibilities offered by color. Whether through various materials such as polyurethane, chewing gum, nail polish, lacquer, gouache or oil paint, color becomes the medium of Léopoldine Roux’s artistic practice.
“It was a desire for escape that led me to paint this series. Confinement and then distancing reinforced this desire for nature, lightness and the need to touch. The sky has become my landmark. To the whims of the yellows, ochres, alizarin and other colored curls, with my bare feet, I swing from one canvas to another, applying light caresses or rubbing layers of glaze mixed by hand. In a daily wandering I paint spaces of comfort, far from the world I inhabit. They are refuge paintings where the warm colors of a sunset and its twilight meet. This series gives me wings. I believe more than ever in the power of air. With Hasta el Cielo, the air be- comes a tactile and contemplative space. Defeat the darkness by painting the light. “ Léopoldine Roux, Studio’s note, July 2020
