Sabrina Amrani participates in Art Basel in Hong Kong, with a solo presentation by Pakistani artist Waqas Khan
Sabrina Amrani is delighted to present the Pakistani artist Waqas Khan with his specific project entitled The Breath of the Compassionate exclusively for Art Basel Hong Kong. The artist surprises us with a polyptych consisting of seven large-format drawings; conducted freehand with a Rotring pen and archival ink on handmade multilayer Wasli paper.
The work shown in Hong Kong is the result of a long working process through which Waqas Khan has internalized and updated some of the most ancient traditions and doctrines that have taken place in the Indus River valley over the centuries, as the Mughal miniatures, the Sufi mystic or Buddhist philosophy. Waqas Khan gathers up in his project The Breath of the Compassionate countless daydreams and wakefulness; makes tradition and contemporaneity meet in erfect symbiosis, shows the fine line between physics and metaphysics; unfolds the relationship between time and space. The artist personifies the mystical belief that man is the greatest creation of God: his mental discipline, hours of study, and an ascetic’s concentration; leads him through complex models ranging from delicate geometric abstraction to accurate organic figuration. His practice involves the exercise of subpar movements like an endlessly repeated mantra that induces him to a mental state where distance is no longer defined by time. With the patience and humility of those who collect ancient knowledge and project new worlds, Waqas Khan builds his delicate constructions on sturdy pillars.
