Sean Kelly is delighted to announce Antony Gormley's solo exhibition STILL MOVING at the Long Museum in Shanghai. This will be the first major presentation of Antony Gormley’s work in China. At its center is Gormley's Critical Mass II (1995) an installation of 60 life-size cast iron body forms. This seminal work has been widely exhibited in Europe, but this will be its first showing in Asia. Some of the forms are installed in a linear progression, recalling the evolutionary ‘ascent of man.’ Some are suspended in an arrested fall, others lie scattered across the space or form a jumbled pile. This multiple work celebrates the sculptural body as object and ground for feeling and engages our deepest hopes and fears; our attraction to light as well as to darkness.
The exhibition also includes a major room-size installation entitled Breathing Room IV (2012). A 3-dimensional drawing in space, it is composed of nesting photo-luminescent frames that all contain the same volume, although they are stretched in different directions. This nesting structure glows for ten minutes in total darkness that is then abruptly interrupted by 40 seconds of blinding light. Hovering between being architecture and being an image of architecture, Breathing Room creates a space in which the viewer becomes the subject in an experiential field that oscillates between the meditative and the interrogative.
