Christopher Cutts Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Matthew Carver. In this third solo show at the gallery, Carver continues to explore painted, fictional interior spaces. He refers to them as "liminal places, often loaded, detailed compositions, complete with paintings within the paintings.". In addition, Carver has included recent figurative works, both seductive and unsettling of which Matthew suggests "hint of the darkness within our dreams and nightmares associated with anthropomorphizing A.I."
As the title of the exhibition, Ghost in the Machine, suggests this new body of work firmly places itself in our present, rapidly evolving paradigm which contemporary Slovenian philosopher, Slavoj Žižek has described as an "awareness that we live in an insulated artificial universe", at a place and time where perhaps something is "out of joint".
Regardless of the otherworldly narrative Carver's paintings evoke, objectively, they are exquisite and arresting paintings.
